POKOTABI / Ranmaru
らんまる
At Ranmaru in Shimomeguro, diners can enjoy nigiri balanced on red-vinegar rice alongside seasonal small plates, paired with an extensive selection of sake and wine at an intimate counter.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set along a quiet street in Shimomeguro, Ranmaru offers a focused sushi experience at a pale-wood counter. The course draws its rhythm from the alternating sequence of seasonal small bites and precisely sculpted nigiri. Seasoned with red vinegar, the sushi rice creates a cohesive pairing with toppings like lean and medium-fatty tuna or seasonal silver-skinned fish, delivering clear contrast in every piece. The signature Ranmaru-maki and other rolled sushi are particularly memorable, bringing together rich ingredients served at just the right temperature.
The restaurant’s extensive drink list is another compelling reason to spend an evening here. With celebrated regional sakes such as Kokuryu, Aramasa, Hitakami, and Gangi on hand, sharing your taste preferences and letting the chef guide your choices adds a distinct pleasure to the meal. The cellar also reaches beyond sake to white Burgundy, Champagne, and curated shochu, allowing diners to tailor their pairings throughout the course.
Operating by reservation only with limited seats, the small room keeps the atmosphere relaxed, where guests can comfortably interact with the affable sushi chefs. Service focuses primarily on dinner across two seatings, with regular closures on Sundays and Mondays. Whether for a special dinner or simply a night dedicated to fine sushi and drinks, it is a venue well worth planning ahead to visit.
